Bone & Joint Health National Action Week

Bone & Joint Health National Action Week is held annually, October 12-20.

This week focuses on disorders including arthritis, trauma, back pain, pediatric conditions, and osteoporosis. “Musculoskeletal disorders affect more than one out of every two persons in the country age 18 and over, and nearly three out of four age 65 and over”, according to The Burden of Musculoskeletal Conditions in the United States.

Musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of physical disability in the country. They can lead to significant disability, a decline in productivity, and quality of everyday life. Between 2009 and 2011, treatment costs associated with musculoskeletal disorders in the U.S. was estimated at $874 billion. Unfortunately, research funding is less than 2% of the National Institutes of Health annual budget and declines each year despite the high costs for treatment.

There are five special days that fall during Action Week. The days are listed below with the testing that can be done to confirm a patient’s diagnosis.

The 2017 theme is Don’t Delay, Connect Today. Early diagnosis is so important. View inspirational events taking place worldwide to raise awareness, add your own event and share photos! To learn more, visit
